MOU signed with the Alliance to End Plastic Waste
2021.03.01The Japan Waste Research Foundation (JWRF) and the Alliance to End Plastic Waste (the Alliance) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on 24 February 2021 to strengthen mutual cooperation over the next three years in encouraging and supporting cities pursuing sustainable waste management programmes.
*The Alliance is an international non-profit organisation partnering with government, environmental and economic development NGOs and communities around the world to address the challenge to end plastic waste in the environment. Through programmes and partnerships, the Alliance focuses on solutions in four strategic areas: infrastructure, innovation, education and engagement, and clean up. As of January 2021, the Alliance has more than 50 member companies and supporters representing global companies and organisations across the plastic value chain.
JWRF and the Alliance, have agreed to collaborate to support cities in reducing the leakage of plastic waste into the environment and addressing the global plastic waste problem through accelerating sustainable waste management and adopting 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle)/CE (Circular Economy) strategies.
Through the MOU, both organisations will work in collaboration to:
- Identify and develop projects in cooperation with cities to stop plastic waste leakage and move cities up the waste management hierarchy;
- Share information, learnings and best practices on waste management and circular economy approaches; and
- Raise awareness and mobilize action around the management of plastic waste.
Both JWRF and the Alliance will evolve approaches to achieve a sustainable society through contributing strategic input, ideas and advice regarding the strategies of each organization.
JWRF has been working as a body to find technological solutions for managing both industrial and municipal wastes both inside and outside Japan by bringing industry, government, academia and civil society together to develop new waste management technologies and systems. Through this collaboration, JWRF will promote international efforts to further improve waste management and advance the application of 3R/CE technologies and approaches in cities in developing countries.
